The best thing about Michigan winters is the sensation of slipping into flannel sheets at the end of the day. If you have never slept in a cold house with flannel sheets, or if you are a flannel hater, read no further. I have a shopping tip to share with flannel lovers. It is a bit pricey, but my hands say it is worth every penny.

The 2013 Porsche Cayenne GTS steering wheel is wrapped in Alcantara—a fabulous composite material that has the look and feel of suede but apparently has better durability. I would have never imagined that the feel of a steering wheel would be the biggest impression left after driving a $137,000 vehicle.

Cayenne_09When I first caught sight of this vermilion beauty in the parking lot, I was taken by its shade of red. I have never been a fan of red cars. When I think of red cars, visions of mid-1980s Pontiacs pop into my mind. But this Cayenne’s red is sublime. Think red barns, juicy red apples, sweet raspberries. The official name is Carmine Red, which comes with an upcharge of $3,140. But with a base price of $83,025, who's counting pennies?

A Great Hour

The dash is also wrapped in luscious Alcantara. But it gets better: it has red stitching and red seatbelts, all details courtesy of two interior packages at an additional $7,105. I was only in the Cayenne for an hour, but I must say it was a great hour. This is the first SUV that I have driven that felt like a sports car. It was a bit scary to think that in some parts of the country, I could buy a house for the price of this vehicle. But the whole time I was driving, I was distracted by the Alcantara. As I drove, I kept moving my hands around on the steering wheel because it felt so damn good.

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and nothing says love like a juicy-red, flannel-lined Porsche Cayenne.
